Okta to Join S&P 500 in Index Reshuffle Nov. 4
S&P Dow Jones Indices will add Okta to the S&P 500 while reshuffling the MidCap 400 and SmallCap 600 before markets open Wednesday.
S&P Dow Jones Indices announced that Okta Inc. will be elevated to the S&P 500, with the change set to take effect before the opening bell on Wednesday, November 4. The identity and access management company, currently a constituent of the S&P MidCap 400, will replace Kenvue Inc. in the large-cap benchmark.
The reshuffle triggers a cascade of adjustments across the broader family of S&P indices. Vacancies created by companies moving up the index ladder will be filled by other firms joining the S&P MidCap 400 and S&P SmallCap 600, a standard procedural outcome whenever a constituent is promoted to a higher-tier index.

Index additions of this nature carry significant market implications. Passive funds and exchange-traded funds benchmarked to the S&P 500 are required to purchase shares of newly added constituents, which can generate substantial buying pressure in the days surrounding the effective date. Okta's inclusion signals that the company meets S&P's criteria for market capitalization, liquidity, financial viability, and float-adjusted weighting thresholds.
The changes were disclosed by S&P Dow Jones Indices through a formal announcement, consistent with the firm's standard practice of providing several days' notice ahead of index rebalancing events. Market participants typically position ahead of the effective date once such announcements are made public.
